The Paci and the Walmart

I am just back from driving myself to Walmart!!  I looked around at all the people and wanted to tell them that I was there...finally.  But, honestly, none of them looked interested.  It was a damn shame!!!!  No change at Walmart....just instead of the red, white and blue of July....there was Christmas, red and green.  I am sooo happy.  I bought 4 $2 pumpkins...I am still into orange..LOL

In last night's obsession, I worked on 12 pacifier clips....wow.....into the cupboard they go for future present needs.  Dana at MADE was so right, when you make one...you can make a dozen...I just ran out of clips..need 4 more...  so fun to make. Note to self:  use starch, cut iron on interfacing 7/8 of an inch and slide it under the quarter inch seam allowance and you will not have to pin.  I prefer the zigzag method of attachment...more secure.
Other note to self......see below pix.  It is 3 inches between one end of Velcro to the other.  Best to change thread color..

The today and the yesterday

The today is first and always first.  This quilt is finished and on the wall.  I was able to drive 3 times today with symptoms, but minimal.  In the morning, I drove to Pier I to get my mother's room spray.  Now things will be inviting there, for her and her visitors.  This afternoon, I drove to see my mother.  I brought last year's Halloween wall hanging to put on her wall...making her very happy.  On the way home, I stopped by Michaels for tiny odds and ends..  I am improving.  I hope that my mood will improve later as there seems to be a big cement block between the head and the heart!!

Then there is the yesterday.  Last night was a chilly night for this time of year in Charlotte.  In the middle of the night, I went to a seldom used closet in the dark and grabbed an extra quilt for our bed.  This morning I found myself under this.  My husband and I acquired a lovely quilt collection BC...before children.....In Miami, I found this at an antique show, must have been at least 30 years ago.... I bought it from a Cuban man who said that his mother had made it when she was living in Cuba.  It had come over in her things.  It has always been damaged with the center of every pink flower way gone.  I bought it for the stunning quilting.  It was only $40 and I thought that the woman must have spent forever hand quilting this beauty.  Finding it on my bed this morning was a treat.  Evidently Pumpkin thought so too....

There we have it...the old and the new....
PS...more....How to get out of my mood....ha....donning this apron on which I appliqued a front from an old T-shirt from Baltimore....It suited me then, and it suits me now:)
And making healthy chicken broth for my dear ol' Ma....from my favorite recipe...Homemade Old-fashioned Chicken Stock from Susan Branch.  After it cooks for hours, I will freeze it in small containers for Mom.
The aroma of chicken soup fills my house, taking away the chill of all kinds!

Alexander's Store NYC

I guess that this is true confession time.  I was 21 when I left home, joined the airlines and moved to NYC from Arizona.  I thought I was tough stuff at the time.....I bought these then, in 1969 at the now defunct, Alexander's store in the heart of the city, across from Bloomingdales.  The tag says Gloria Vanderbuilt.  I just loved these bags.  Why would anyone keep something for 43 years??  I think I am my grandmother's girl...
Good thing I did and good thing I found them...they are perfect for my new IPad!!

More...and the Molas...

After I wrote the last post, I cried.   Then I realized that it was not a crying situation.  Having a grandmother for a best friend who is almost 100 with no memory loss at all and in great shape....that is a joyful thing.  I am grateful....And, my sister and I were both born in the month of December...11 years and 11 days apart....!!  When we heard that my sister was a girl, Grandma and I toasted.....with prune juice...ha ha...such memories...

Down to more business...in my search for space, I found these wadded into the top shelf of one of my fabric cases...I bought these hand sewn Molas back in the day when I traveled to Panama... I may need an estate sale before I die...... What am I going to do with these?
Since the family china cabinet is full of fabric already...maybe I should get another one????  Oh, no ...the new austerity program... I forgot already(:

Dear Grandma...

I know that you would think that I have been overindulgent.  I was injured and was a great big baby about it.  I self medicated with fabric....I know, I know.....no self discipline like you had.  While looking to reorganize my sewing room to fit in my indulgences, I came upon these...lost to me forever in my mess.  First,  your photo album of my mother's wedding and my birth.   My mother was an only child and you loved her so much.
Tucked inside was this....your confirmation book 1910 into the Lutheran religion.  Since you were born in 1896, you must have been 14 and you saved it all this time.  I remember that because of your early religious studies,  you could recite so many Bible passages, in Swedish and in English.
Here is the hardest of them all....The black letters that came to you once you had left Sweden for America....You came at 15 with only your steamer trunk to meet up with your sister, to see the world and to get away from your father...such a 15 year old you were.  First came notice that your father had died..December 13, 1917.  It took two weeks for these letters to arrive and would have taken two weeks by ship for you to get home for a funeral, even if you had had the money.  Then came the other two...even more painful.  These came during the world wide flu epidemic and they broke your heart.  Your favorite sister at such a young age died December 4, 1918 of the flu.  Your mother then died Christmas day, 21 days later of stomach cancer.  And you so young in America, cooking in wealthy houses in Boston barely in your twenties, with a broken heart.
I had originally thought that this ticket cover belonged to your original ticket, but I see that you visited your family in Sweden the month before they died.  I wonder if this was the time you reported dodging the German warships in passage from Sweden to Boston.
In my office I have the original trunk that you brought when you immigrated to America.
Then Grandpa died on December 4th...So all the special people in your life died in the month of December.  Yet living together, you  made every Christmas a special Swedish Christmas for us.  So now Grandma...my life has not been so hard...a lot thanks to you and the things you taught me.  I would not have come to this post if it were not for all my fabric overflowing my sewing room...and me now looking in the office for more room....Sigh....so I do think you are still watching me...I am going to shoot now for the fabric diet....Which is harder, the fabric diet or the chocolate diet, I do not know...I remember our last visit when you were 5 months shy of 100...We looked over the pictures of the Lottorp Hotel in Orland that your family had owned...and we played a mean game of Canasta....did you cheat??????   I also saw that True Detective Magazine and Bit-O-Honey under your pillow.....xxoo I love you and miss you..Diane

Worry...worthwhile????

I have a wonderful daughter who lives far away.  She is beautiful, smart, can cook and can sew.  She is a classical musician and and Irish tin whistle player...she loves animals and solitude....Sooooooooooooo  what does my girl decide to do on a Saturday?????

THIS...  And the mother worry goes on and on.....

Quilting at my house..or the way we, I mean I..am....

Bored now with my political quilt, it has been laid to rest with the rest of my UFO's..eg zigzag, potholders, etc etc...I turn to strips.  The last bit of table cleaning revealed these strips.  I had thought I would make a four patch/one patch...again... with the tons of 2.5 inch strips that I have.  Not too exciting here, just could not make it work.  My eye then  turned to the Granny Block and the Ginger Monkey's good tutorial.
My use-me-up scraps....being so very dull... I ended up with this instead.  Life is short, you know.
Story of my life.  I think that Donna (do not let it go to your head now:) is right.  Getting rid of my scraps just may be the best....gets me into my good or gooder stuff faster..  There is just NO way to use up scraps.  They are a bit like rabbits...no offense to bunnies:)

Political Medallion process....

I have been working on this tonight...I think that the next part with be HSTs since I have been obsessing about those lately with the Zigzag quilt.  Hope to have this finished by the elections, or the top anyway....and then, I am not thinking about politics for a long long long long time.

Morning...

My two sided bibs.  You get to see every angle of them....  Just because....100% cotton, lined with washed flannel and secured with Velcro.  Baby spills, flip it over and it is pretty on the other side.  Going to put them away for the occasions to arise.  I hate to work under pressure.

There was a blogger once who pontificated on how ridiculous it was to photograph quilts in trees, etc.  She just wanted to see quilts.  Well, I do think it is fun to try to do different poses ..but, the one below reminded me of her.  I mean, what kind of fool puts bibs with clothespins in bushes????
I think I am in the mood.  I finished my bibs at least.  And, I am probably pissy because I did my 5 minute drive to the Arboretum this morning.  I was sick of Michaels, so down the row was Bed, Bath and Beyond.  I went in and bought frying pans. While I was in line I got symptoms..Trying not to be discouraged here.  Today ends month three and begins month 4.  Hello month four...TBTG I love woodpeckers and my sewing machine...

Betty, friends got those panels in Sew Much Fun, Gastonia, NC.  I googled Halloween fabric panels for you...I did not find these, but good heavens there are trillions out there.

The soothing of Batiks..

I really enjoyed making this quilt.  I hope the recipient feels the same comfort.  It is 31 inches by 40 inches.  Probably for a child, but really I would like it to go to the Women's Cancer Unit because it is so pretty.  I am just afraid it is not big enough.

I love it when I have a fabric in my collection that I have just tucked away and really forgotten about.  When I see it...I hear....Choose me, Choose me:)  And it is perfect!  Here we are all washed and ready.
My PT told me to start driving to the local Michael's store...5 minutes away..every day.  She said to go in the store and the minute I have symptoms to go home.  So I told my husband that I was either going to see my mother or to the antique store.  He asked me what part of the instructions did I miss???  Fine...I went to Michaels and came home...tiny symptoms only..

The Potholders and such...emphasis on the such...

How do I say this??? I need to do the potholders as planned, but I tend to leave them to last because they make such a scrappy mess.  I decided to do bibs instead.  My friends are becoming grandparents again and again...  These fabrics are so cute for bibs....but.........
I came upon the rest of the 6" cut batik squares from the other day.  These were not the fall colors, but more pastel, so I had just left them on the desk for a clean-up time.  It would certainly be fun to make them into something...instead of the bibs which were instead of the potholders, etc, etc.....
At first glance there were not enough, and they were dull.  I found a few orange ones and cut them randomly to insert for more color.  That was fun...so I cut some of the others too... This is a random quilt...no design wall, just the liberated thing.  Very, very fun...
I finished a top.  The color is off due to the dark and the flash...but I think it is fine...
If I could get it quilted by Wednesday,  of course without pushing myself...I could turn it into Guild for the hospital.  I could then have four and would be all caught up with my goal of one hospital quilt a month...I would indeed be happy.  I really love the orange stripe.  Sad to see it almost used up.  The batiks remind me of the fun trips to Pittsburgh taking our daughter back and forth to college at Carnegie Mellon.  At the time Charlotte did not have JoAnn's fabrics, but a little town outside of Pittsburgh did...Mountain View...was the highlight of the 8 hour trip...sales galore...nice memories...

Clickety Clack:)

Last night I cut these out, after lunch today, I finished them.  The tute came from Fairy Face Designs.  The way I did them before is posted here.  I finished these 10 this afternoon.

Adding it to the 14 that I already had makes 24!  I had to make more cuz I only had boy ones left really.  Needed a few girl ones and ones for parents to do not want to know the sex yet.
These are even more fun than the tissue holders.  I think that they could not only be used for baby, but for stocking stuffers for grandchildren who visit.  Then they would each know which face cloth was theirs...or they could be stocking stuffers for college kids with the college fabric on the fabric side.  They could be fundraisers.....many possibilities for the holidays...

Marie, Thank you for picking up the facecloths at Marshalls for me!!

Come Saturday Morning....a post...

Just look at what Mr. O'Quilts found in the mailbox this morning!!  He did not say anything, he just looked at me.  That of course saved me from having to explain why someone would have to buy 24 zippers at Zipit on Etsy, instead of just getting a plain one locally when I needed it.  It saved me from explaining why a woman needs choices...choices in color and choices in size when she makes pouches and bags.  It saved me from explaining why I needed zippers when I have not made a bag or a pouch in a while....I love you honey!!
Last night I was so done...I mean sooooo done on this concussion thing that I decided I needed red wine.  I also decided that if I put the wine in one of my grandmother's china TEA cups, that it would not count as the forbidden alcohol of the injured...I mean really, three months!!!!  So I did.
It was so yummy that I had two.  Eeeeeekkkk   freedom....  And I was right, it did not count:)

Starting the Holiday thing....

Tonight, after the Charlotte Modern Quilt Guild meeting, I finished my tissue holders.  I got the tute from...Skip to My Lou.  Of course, I then found a tutorial I like better from Notes from the Patch via Debby's blog. (But, then I am a bit lazy to do the extra trim....hmmm)  It is way too late for me now because I have just  finished 50...just need to put in the tissues.  I like to hand them out during the holidays.
It was Terri who introduced me to these when she gave me one to take to the airport with me as I said goodbye to my daughter.  She was moving to Europe and I am a big cry baby!!  I loved it.....thx Terri....
Now that these are made...I am on to more potholders.  I had thought I was set with 17 potholders, but I only have 7 left.....that will be my next project.....Glad to be getting going with these now..

Walmart vs making the bag????

I must tell you that Walmart lures....However, the distressed looks on the faces of my friends last night and the total exasperation of my sister and Mr. O'Quilts....led me to make this bag instead.
I know you have seen this project before, as shown in this post.  Here it is again... I mean come on, it was either this or Walmart!
Working with leftover screen from my screened in porch and vinyl from the Walmart that I used to know(:. a person can enclose a picture or print from a magazine in the vinyl.  The dog pictured here is from a dog food bag.  It is best to use batiks for these kinds of projects as they do not ravel and are easily attached with a spot of plain old glue and zigzag.  I like to use variegated thread for this funky look.  The dog part itself is a small pocket reinforced on a piece of orange webbing.

The wrap around straps are reinforced at the bag bottom with more of my friend, the zigzag stitch.

Other news:  Both my husband's MRI and Alexis' MRI's are normal.  Seems like Alexis has an undisclosed infection and has been told to stay away from our susceptible mother.  Grateful me is now going to sit in the sun and chill.  Mr. O'Quilts has agreed to take me to the Modern Quilt Guild tonight.

Clickety Clack

My mother wrote this poem for me and published it in her first poetry book. I was totally offended..especially when my sister had a darling sweet loving poem.  Mother has since repented in only the way she can...After making these quilts in just a few days, maybe, just maybe..I can see what she meant..

Hear Ye, Hear Ye.....

The world did not stop in the three months I have been injured...a complete shock to the system here!!!  That having been said, the negotiations between the upstairs office and the downstairs office are complete.  My overindulgence will stop.  (after the next shipment from Fabric.com)  eeekkkk.  Do let me show you today's big deal.  I am now good friends with my UPS driver...
Those Fabric.com sales tug at my heart the same way my meatloaf got to Zoey...irresistible.   Next naughty thing injured me did...(they say that for sure you are getting better when you start to milk it...ha ha)  So, like I was saying...the next thing I did was to pretend that I was retired.  The design wall that you see here is in my office...  I am seeing two clients on Wed.  I think I will just test the waters and see if they care...they will not even notice!!
You would think that my sewing room is enormous for the things discovered there.  It is not big, but it sure is   a mess....therefore, I have found these random batik 6 inch squares leftover from another project.  I cut 6 black and white and 6 yellow for centers and am sewing them together for a future corner cut 9 patch quilt.  When all twelve 9 patches are made, I will put them in a project box and try to finish something else......maybe...I might even label the box...so there will be no future surprise:)
Last night I talked with my mother...or tried to anyway.  My sister was there to answer the phone. My mother would not talk to me...She was mad because I did not come visit.  Tonight Mr. O'Quilts took me to visit.  The worker told me that Queen Alice said that I no longer cared about her and thus she has been abandoned.  Lordy....My mother then told me that it was difficult seeing me looking so good, rested and chatty without thinking that I was not really injured, just not wanting to see her.  I know that along with Parkinson's comes a processing problem...and the stop and go of Parkinsons...sometimes yes and sometimes no.  It is still hard.  Hard for her and hard for me.

Ending on a great note is Adopt a Mimi.  My mother has had a high school volunteer for 3 years.  She comes every Sunday morning at 10, stays for 30 or 40 minutes helping her with her poetry and the computer.  Now she just reads poetry to her.  She formed this awesome organization as part of her school project basing it all on her experience with my mother.  If you click on the link and look at the bottom right hand corner, you will see the first Adopt a Mimi....Alice...that is my mother.  Isn't this a wonderful story!!
